I guess this is what they call a sketch dump. I haven't done this in the past because because I'm painfully shy about showing my sketchbook drawings. But I'm doing it now!

Drawing dancers is a big challenge. It forces you to be quick because they don't stop moving. Sometimes, all you can get is a really abstract scribble. These were from a ballet class a couple of weeks ago.

Living Room Rehearsal

So, here's another one of my crude sketchbook sketches. Ben's going to Hong Kong this weekend to perform with David, and since they're doing an acoustic set, there was no need to rent out a space to rehearse. Instead they just had their rehearsal in our living room, which was awesome because I got in some sketch time AND I got a private concert. Pretty good consolation prize for not being able to go to the show! Not only that, it brought back a flood of childhood memories from when my parents used to do small, intimate concerts in our house and invite a bunch of our friends over. Felt just like home! It was a real treat.

Employee of the Month

It's always been really hard for me to let people look through my sketchbooks. To me, my sketchbook feels like my diary, even though I don't write in it. It always made me feel vulnerable if I let someone look at all my bad drawings. But last week, my friend Marcos asked if he could take a look, and I finally said okay, after some hesitation. I felt uneasy at first, but after a minute or so, I realized I didn't care. Everybody makes bad drawings. So I thought maybe I'll post some of my more crude sketchbook drawings once in a while... The ones that aren't TOO embarrassing, of course.

David Archuleta

I normally don't write much on my blog because I just like posting artwork and calling it a day, instead of rambling unnecessarily. But for this one, I really wanted to share the story behind it...

My boyfriend, Ben started playing bass for David Archuleta back in April of this year, and we flew to Gilbert, AZ this weekend because David was headlining the 2011 Constitution Fair, an annual event held in the city of Gilbert. I was really thrilled to finally get to see a live performance because I had never been to one of his shows, only a rehearsal just before they toured Asia back in July-- So this was a brand new and exciting experience for me! Danielle and I (the wife of the drummer, Steven) got to hang out on stage during the sound check and sat front row during the show. Obviously, we had a great time. One of the things I really enjoyed was watching the younger, die-hard Archie fans. They exhibited the whole spectrum of emotion, from sheer glee to hysterical screams and sobs. They were so devoted! After I managed to get backstage again (Getting passed security was a whole other story in itself, which I may have to make a separate post about later on!) we stayed in the trailer a little while before it was time to go back to our hotel. The way it worked was the band got in the van first and pulled up near the barricade where the fans gathered, then David ran out to give them one last smile and wave goodbye, hopped in the van with the rest of the band, and we sped off. It was surreal being inside that van but still being a spectator. It was an experience I'll never forget... And a story I had to make into a drawing.

I was fortunate enough to have had Corny as a life drawing instructor at CalArts just before he left because of his deteriorating health. I just found out he passed away this morning. One day in class, he walked up to me, stopping right in my view of the model and said "Don't stop drawing. If you stop drawing, I'll kill you." What I loved most about his class was that he never shoved a style in your face and told you to draw that way. He let you draw like you.

He will be missed. Thank you, Corny.

In Phil's class, we wrote an adjective and a noun on a piece of paper and drew the words out of hat. My two words were "bumpy" and "bird" and it just happened that both of my words were chosen.

My roommate Taylor is designing a costume for a solo piece in the BFA 2 Dance Concert next month. He asked if I could do a couple of drawings for him. I did more, but this is the only one I have a picture of. The dancer is going to be painted to look like a mandrake root with big red lips and yellow-stained teeth.
